alright i am a big sony fan i owned a ps1, a ps2 and i stood in line for 5 hours for my psp but lately waiting for my next gen console the 360 has been pulling me towards them. I cant decide whether i should wait a little longer for the ps3 and see if it picks up or should i go with a 360. also i dont have an hdtv in my room so i also wanna know if its worth it at all right now without an hdtv

I guess it all depends on what games you want to play. Gear of War is one of the best games I've ever played and I've played a lot of games. I miss it a lot now that I'm finished.

Am playing Viva Pinata right now and it is a very addictive and time-consuming game. And there are other great games like Halo 3 coming up. Not to mention the new expansion for Oblivion.

I'm going to wait for at least another year and a half or two years for the PS3 and see what happens.

I wouldn't say Halo 3 is a great game just yet. Halo 2 was really hyped up, and it really sucked. So I'm not expecting anything major from them. I'll be buying a 360 eventually. Gears of War and Oblivion were the games that sold me on that.

But to be honest the PS3 isn't going to do well. They've only sold 3 million units and they need to sell 80+ million to just break even. If they had managed to break even the PS3 isn't going to start getting very good games till 2 years after it's releases. Unfortunatlly the PS3 didn't release itself with any system seller titles.

Whilst I agree with the lack of system sellers, where in the hell did you pull 80 million from? In the first two or three years ALL of the major companies wont be breaking even on the consoles themselves because all the new technology will be costing them a lot of money. It doesn't matter how many consoles they sell, each console will be making a loss per sale until the technology used inside becomes cheaper. They make their money up through official accessories, games, console bundles and nowadays arcade titles online that cost x amount to buy.

As for games coming out, 2 years is probably a decent guess for games like FFXIII and MGS4, but titles like Resistance: Fall Of Man are already out (and that probably is the only title really worth getting for it at the moment, imo) are already out and with the new Home feature (which looks amazing) and LittleBig Planet coming out soon there's tons of stuff that will mean the PS3 is probably a success.

I dunno where I got 80 million. I remember hearing it from someone, and I tend to spew back info like that in discussions. Usually it ending with me looking stupid Razz

And it's not true that all of the next-gen consoles won't break even. The 360 took off like a jet, and the Wii itself uses inexpensive technology (Not sure if they're loosing money or breaking even though, I don't follow the Wii)

Yeah, but taking off like a jet doesn't mean it was breaking even. Like I said, if they are not making a profit with the console itself, its likely that they are recording a loss, at least for the time being. But you're probably right with the Wii, I can't seem to tell how much that would cost to produce as the controller is pretty damn complex.

My honest opinion on the situation though, is don't be a fan boy about what you choose. Each console has its strengths, and theres going to be some great games out for all of them. Theres no point sticking with a brand through loyalty, if there is games on the 360 you really like the look of then go for it! If you think you can fend off it, and even the PS3 for that matter, until there are a ton of games around that you fancy then do that. Don't let these companies grab a hold of you, you decide when its right to buy a console because in this day and age, they cost a small fortune and you might only be able to choose one, so no point rushing into it.

It doesn't suck on a standard tv. You just don't see all the details. And if you're not going from high def to standard, you won't even know the difference. I really believe that both systems have long lives ahead of them and that the ps3 will come into its own but it may take a few years.

Yeah, everything looks fine on standard tv... but I must say Gears of War is almost perfection on a 42" HDTV. It's one hell of a game.

Yes...yes it is! I cannot wait for Gears of War II to be released. I know, it'll be a long time but I can still anticipate.

I might as well chime in about the system sales as it seems everyone is getting it wrong here. =p

Here are official estimations on current system sales worldwide:
SOURCE

360 - 10.9 Million
Wii - 5.8 Million
PS3 - 2.5 Million

Sony just recently cracked the 2 Million mark because of their just recent launch in Europle. However you can see Nintendo doing phenominally well; in just a short 5 months they've nearly cracked 6 Million worldwide and have put quite a considerable dent in Microsofts dominance in market share. PS3 isn't doing as bad as it was before, but losing a lot of key exclusive software isn't helping their cause. They just lost Devil May Cry 4, MGS4 is rumoured to be coming to the 360 and nobody knows about FFXIII at this time.

And as far as money lost on systems if I'm not mistaken Sony loses the most, followed by Microsoft and Nintendo as Nintendos tech is actually based on the Cube. Although the motion sensing technology isn't cheap, hence the price of Wii Remotes. After launch Sony's software to hardware ratio was less than 1:1, can't remember the exact figure. The Wii's was 5:1, with Zelda being 1:1.

XBox may also be lowering prices this spring or early summer. And they've also announced that if bluray wins the war, they will offer a blu-ray add-on for the 360. And with the new elite out, I have to say that Microsoft is doing everything right in this war.

I still have hopes for the PS3. I would never ever have thought I'd get a 360 but when the ps2 died, playing FFXI on 360 got mighty appealing. So, for me, as for many people I think, the choice came down to games in the end.

We have a big problem with our GoW game save and have to decide if deleting the existing one will solve the problem. I am playing tons of Viva Pinata atm and it is pretty addicting and lots of fun. Soon, we'll be returning to XI on a more limited basis, as soon as some personal issues there are resolved.

What game did you ask about Birrix? My brain is now mush and I couldn't figure out what the initials stood for.

XBL = XBOX Live, I dunno if people use that lol, but I've seen it in forums and stuff before. If you fancy a game of Gears let me know, I haven't played it in a while and a game of co-op would be fun Very Happy

Also, I'm really not sure how the saves work, I think its something like each profile will have all the levels/chapters you've played through saved once you've done them, but you can only have one save that you can continue from where you left off.

Also Stephen if that was aimed at me, I dont know what I got wrong there. Although I had forgotten about Wii tech being based on GC components (I had heard it before somewhere), the 360 and defo PS3 is bound to be making a loss. In terms of FFXIII, SE have said many times it wont be multiplatform, but that spinoff games and non-core games (e.g. Crystal Chronicles) may find their way to other consoles. Incidentally they have said recently that the White Engine (their next gen development unit) is open platform, meaning next gen games can be easily ported between consoles. Whilst SE have said XIII wont be on 360, its still a possibility. More likely than not though, this just means games other than core FF games can be made for 360 as well as PS3 in the future.

As for MGS4, I still doubt it will be released on 360 straight away (although it would save me around £450 if it were), and will one day find its way to the console in a Substance styled game. Although saying that Snake Eater and Subsistence never found their way to Xbox so its still possible they wont. Must admit whilst DMC4 being on 360 is great for me, I wasn't that surprised that it happened (Microsoft and Capcom have been flirting with each other through Dead Rising and Lost Planet), but was a little dissapointed. More competition between exclusives and companies keeps the industry fresh and full with new ideas that can push the boundaries of gaming. Without the competition to strive and do well with a title, 3rd party companies will just release the game on multiplatform and run the risk of being a bit half arsed in their approach to refining the smaller details.
