| I've noticed now two people coming and posting foul links on the boards. I'm just wondering what's being done about them? Are their posts deleted and IP's banned? |

I frequent a Playstation/Xbox forum, have done for about 4 years now, and for *atleast* the last year and a half of my stay they've had spam and foul links. Dunno what they did exactly, but they now have a lot less than they used to. Could ask the admin if you want me to |

| They are most likely spam bots, as I've remember dealing with them on other forum boards before. I already notified someone about it and hopefully they can remove the person. |

They're not bots. We have a built in way to keep out bots: the random series of characters you have to duplicate when you sign up.
We do ban their IP addresses and email addresses. In serious cases of repeat offenders who have a rotating IP address, I've begun banning the entire suffix of their IP address. It has to be pretty serious for me or Zanko to do that though since it may limit legitimate new users. |

| not trying to cause a war of some sort, but wasn't that last user a spam bot because he went and randomly posted different link but with the same idea? I would automatically assume that it would be, just the way that they posted the links and all. |

No problem. But it can't be a spam bot. Bots cannot read text and only registered users can post here. To register, one must duplicate a set of randomly generated letters and numbers. So, at least initially, the person HAS to be there at the keyboard. After that, it may be a bot that takes over. |

| But couldn't they make an account and then use a bot to post? |

Yes they could. I guess the only thing we can hope for is that most people don't want to take the time to do that. And if you ban their email addresses and IP addresses, it makes it much more time consuming for them to do it again. So, Zank, be sure to ban both the IP address and their email address before you delete the offensive post and their account. If you notice an email address such as @writeforinfo.com or something, use this
*@writeforinfo.com
to ban the entire suffix of that email address. That way, they can't just make a new one. Doing that a few months ago to a couple really cut down on the spammers. |
