|
|
So a couple of threads on our favorite villain accidentally got deleted so I thought I'd start a new one. I was thinking about Sylar after reading an interview with the actor. He said that he thinks Sylar is one of the creepiest villains ever and I have to agree. But what is it that makes him so creepy...
I think a lot has to do with the actor. At first, he was just a disemobied voice on the phone, taunting Dr. Suresh about helping to make him into the monster he has become...
But the creep factor totally skyrocketed when we got our first look at him. Small boned, pretty short, not at all threatening in a traditional way, he exudes confidence and seems consumed by the idea that he is meant to change the world, to step out of mediocrity into the spotlight. And it is very tragic that the man who was trying to help our new heroes actually told him about his power and propelled him into his current, incredibly brutal killing spree. How horrible that the first heroe the poor Doctor was able to identify turned out to be so twisted and self-absorbed. Not to mentio insane!
Now, I'm dying to find out what other powers besides telekinesis he has absorbed and how many heroes he has murdered. And how the hell did he resist Eden's suggestion? Does he have some inate ability to resist her kind of suggestion? Watching "Homecoming" again, I think that even the Haitian had to use chloryphorm to put Sylar out completely.
Oh and one final lament, why did Eden have to die? She was just becoming interesting. She had become three dimensional and had the coolest power of all (imo, and it's the one I'd want to have). Of course, the very fact that I'm still upset shows that they killed off the right hero.
So...any thoughts as we count down to Monday (only 3 more days!!!!)

Well, I know it's after Monday, but now that I've seen that ep, I think we can safely add "weird cockroach affinity" to the list of things that makes the character of Sylar creepy.
However, in my opinion, the real core of Sylar's creepiness, and that of most great villains, is the combined intensity and twistedness of his ambition. I suppose a good real-life parallel (in more ways than one) would be the people that we see and hear on American Idol. The early half of the season is always full of the comically bad singers who most people enjoy watching just as much as the good singers, just because they often sound and/or act so terrifically ridiculous.
However, their inability to accept rejection and their consequent reactions are often inappropriate, and once or twice even bordered on becoming violent, when one singer approached the judges' table and attempted to throw Simon's water all over him.
Sylar is a bit like them. He believes he is actually *destined* for notoriety and respect oweing to his deeds and talents. What's more, for whatever reason, he also believes that he *deserves* to have that notoriety and respect. The further he descends into his desire for fame adn the belief that he deserves it, the more amoral he becomes in his efforts to achieve it. Had Gabriel simply been content to be a *good* person rather than a famous one, he may never have become a villain.

Nice comparison of Sylar to those American Idol Psychos.
The guy who portrays Sylar does a darn good job of making the character creepy. I'll admit I wouldn't want to be standing next to him alone on a bus or anywhere.
Oh yeah and that cockroach was just wrong. |

The cockroach thing was indeed some extra creepy stuff, but I feel certain it will tie in as extremely important somehow. Like maybe one of his powers is that he can telepathically communicate with animals or bugs. Or maybe there is another superhuman who can shapeshift into animals and who wants to come to his aid.
I wouldn't normally speculate so much, but this show is like a 7-course dinner plus dessert for speculators. Virtually no details are insignificant, and they seem to go out of their way to invite and bait the predictors among us. Did I mention that they are DAMN good at it? 'Cause they are. |

Oh, and I meant to expound on this before, but I was in a hurry. There was a part where I said of Sylar that "He believes he is actually *destined* for notoriety and respect oweing to his deeds and talents".
I meant to add to that was "instead of having notoriety and respect for using his power wisely and to help others." |

| I think what makes Sylar so creepy is how he regards the other heroes. He looks at them with the same mechanical fascination he regards the watches he fixes. He has this detachment from humankind as a whole. It's like he sees himself as something to improve, and the other people just parts, that will eventually supplement him as a 'hero.' |

He does look at people like they are not the same species as he is and like he's superior to them. I think it extends to all people.
And his belief that he was just waiting for whatever was going to happen that would make him different, fulfilling his destiny, makes him very dangerous. His destiny is a puzzle he is going to figure out, even if he has to rip apart the pieces and smash them into a shape he finds pleasing. |

I have to agree about everything, especially the skin crawling. I know a lot of people hate Sylar, but guess what, you're supposed to hate Sylar. He's the villain and we hate the best villains.
I think we have Peter to fulfill our fantasies about how powerful Sylar would be if he absorbed everyone's powers. Peter can do the same but he doesn't have to kill anyone to do it. |

OMG I completely missed that about Peter hmmm guess he could be pretty cool too , but my fav guy is still Hiro:P. That's true about Villians , I mean what would a villian be if he didn't have anything creppy about him. |

Something to add given the last few episodes of the season.
Notice how Sylar seemed to be able to resist the powers like Eden's mind-control and Hiro's time stop? When he has time to prepare, he seems to be able to resist their powers. That adds to his frightening nature as well.
My brother and I discussed this about Sylar, and we think it's because of his original innate power that he is able to do this. His power was to figure out how things work, including other superhumans' powers, just by being around them and looking at them. If he can do that, that would sort of explain his ability to circumvent their effects. That also explains why he seems to be able control the powers and use them to better effect than even the people he stole the powers from. It also makes him not only a good villain, but also makes Sylar and Peter particularly good nemeses for each other. |

| I think Sylar is such an interesting character to watch and see his developement. He is one of the creepiest villians that I have come across and I think that there are a lot of factors that add to his creepiness. I think the actor plays the charatcer so well and really dedicated himself to the part. Also I think learning about Sylar's past and seeing what he does to people through the special effects they use make him even creepier |
