Twentieth Century Fox is finally moving forward with a live-action adaptation of the hugely popular manga "Dragonball," casting the stars of the movie and setting a release date of next summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Justin Chatwin is starring as the hero Goku, while James Marsters will play the villain Piccolo in the sci-fi adventure, which will be directed by James Wong. The movie has been slated for a worldwide release date of Aug. 15, 2008.
Stephen Chow, the filmmaker behind Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, is producing.
The story follows an adult humanoid alien named Goku, who discovers that he was sent to Earth to blend in and destroy our population but instead elects to protect it from an oncoming alien onslaught bent on dominating the universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name.
"Dragonball" is one of the most successful Japanese cultural exports of all time. The manga, created by Akira Toriyama and published by Tokyo's Jump Comics, was adapted into graphic novels, video games and a phenomenally successful television series that ran in Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America. "Dragonball's" popularity also generated more than $4 billion in merchandising sales. In North America, the property was called "Dragonball Z."
Production begins later this year. Other major roles are currently being cast.
James Wong did some really cool X-Files episodes and is a pretty great writer. Plus, since this script is finished, it can go quickly into production during the strike. And I know most of us no longer think of Piccolo as a villain, but it could be cool. |

| *Sigh* This is such a continuity error. I'm just not even going to start, I'll be interested to see James Marsters in the movie, I'm just not expecting anything. |

According to Wiki (see below), he was the original enemy or nemesis for Goku:
Piccolo (ピッコロ, Pikkoro?) is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball metaseries. Piccolo was first introduced in the series as the evil incarnate of the God of Earth, making him a demon and archrival of the primary protagonist named Son Goku. However, it is later revealed that he is from the race called the Namekians. Even though Piccolo is consistently referred to as male, being from the Namekian race however, he has no gender.
Piccolo's name is originally derived from the musical instrument, as all of the great Demon King Piccolo Daimo's henchmen had the names of various instruments. Around the start of the Freeza Saga, it's revealed that his name means "another world" in Namekian.[1]
After his narrow defeat against Goku, Piccolo is soon forced to form an at first uneasy alliance with Goku and his friends against newer, more dangerous threats. Out of necessity he also takes it upon himself to train Goku's child Son Gohan, forming a powerful bond which ultimately redeems him when he sacrifices himself to save the child's life. After his resurrection he fully joins Goku and the others in their struggles against ever more powerful villains. |

Yes I know who Piccolo is BA, but it still is a continuity error. Piccolo was never the bad guy for Dragonball Z. Piccolo first appeared in Dragonball and fought Son Goku when he was a kid, after he was defeated the Piccolo we all know an love (Voiced by Scott McNeal) was introduced and became a good guy during the start of Dragonball Z.
I'm kind of a stickler for things like this. DBZ has a lot of memories for me, it was the first anime I ever watched religiously so naturally if they screw up the live action movie I'm gonna be a little miffed. But still I'll see it, I'm a masochist about this stuff. Lol |
